P.O.W.E.R Technique for Public Speaking


P.O.W.E.R Technique


P – Prepare your talk


  • Reflect, Research and Revisit what you are going to say. 
  • Get your speech written and bullet pointed. 
  • Practice, Practice, Practice. 
  • Rehearse where possible. 
  • Dress Up appropriately


O – Orient yourself for Success 


  • Arrive early, Know the venue/room layout. 
  • Get accustomed to the stage/speaking area. 
  • Audio Visual – Test the sound system and room acoustics. 
  • Connect and Familiarize yourself with people/key stakeholders. 
  • Have your notes accessible for final look


W - WORK the Audience (Build a Rapport)

  • Listen to hot topics common amongst your audience.
  • Get to know a people in the audience for familiar faces.
  • Understand what your audience are going through and their challenges.
  • Create dialogue with your audience so they get to know you.


E - Energize your Delivery

If you are not excited for your talk, don’t expect the audience to be.

 

  • Body Language - Your posture on stage.
  • Gesture appropriately - natural hand movements.
  • Purposeful movement.
  • Voice - Volume (optimum) and Modulation (fast, slow, high, low).
  • Pause - Avoid filler words, for Impact. 

 

R - React to audience signal as you speak/present

 

  • Guests nodding or affirming
  • look and call on them to affirm your idea. 

 

  • Audience looking away or disengaged
  • Draw them in again. 

 

  • Unexpected Interruption
  • Technical issue, fire alarm or late comer.
  • Audience Reacting
  • Clapping, Laughing or Crying

Final Speech (4mins- 5mins Duration) - 13th July, 7:00pm


  • Any topic you want to speak about that will inspire or motivate your listeners. 

 

  • Use Speaking Techniques you learnt in the workshop:

·        Pause

·        Posture

·        Eye Contact

·        Smile when Speaking

·        Hand Gestures

·        Facial Expression

·        Voice Modulation and Pace

·        React to audience – Ask audience a question.
