Discover You Voice, Speak With Confidence
Session Three

Recording of our first session, 17th March 2022

Body Language

  • Speaking is a full body sport, remember your audience are watching your conversation.
  • Our gestures and expressions amplify our message.
  • Our hand movement, facial expressions, smiles and posture are all an extension to what we are thinking in our mind.
  • Eye contact with audience is important so they know you are looking at them and talking to them.
  • Ensure you have a comfortable resting position for your hands and use your hands when expressing what you are saying and then bring it back to resting position.
  • Your smile is such a powerful tool, it relaxes you as well as your audience. They will react to what energy you portray from upfront - nervous or relaxed and confident.

Verbal Highlights

  • Verbal highlights - tone, pace, volume and pitch of your voice are important when you speak.
  • Your verbal tone makes a huge difference in how your words land in the audience. How your audience hear what you saying.
  • Be conscious of the pace of your words (slow or fast) , use your words at the right pace to maximize your voice.
  • High pitch and low pitch of voice can be used to express the moment you are trying to share with the audience, from stern voice to a low whisper as an example.
  • Varying your voice modulation will not make you monotone and result in your audience being bored.

The Power of Pause

  • You should pause instead of using filler words - umm, errrs, you know, so etc
  • A pause can be used give the audience that crucial 2 or 3 seconds to absorb what you just said. That important point to digest in their minds.
  • A pause can be used to create impact allowing your audience to reflect and at the same time allowing you to take a breath.
  • Pausing is a good technique to transition from one key point to the next.

Video Assignment - Due 30th March

Objective of this exercise is to do a video telling me the story below  in your own style (does not have to be exact word for word):

  • Use body language
  • Verbal highlights

One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference to that one.”

Please position yourself appropriately in front of the camera so that your hand movement and your upper body is seen in your video.

- Work on your 4 - 5mins speech and please ask me if you have any questions.
